Keyboard Form Factors: Full-Size, TKL, 75%, 65%, and 60%
Compare keyboard form factors from full-size to 40%, plus Alice and split layouts, with key counts, published widths and a practical buying checklist.
Keyboard form factors describe which blocks of keys a keyboard keeps and how it arranges them. Full-size preserves a number pad, TKL removes it, and smaller percentages progressively move functions onto layers. Alice and split describe geometry rather than a fixed size. Start with the keys you need, then compare actual case dimensions.

Keyboard percentages and key counts
A percentage is an informal category, not a promise of an exact number of switches or a percentage of desk width. Encoders, physical layout variants and additional macro keys change counts. The manufacturer examples below show why you should read the layout diagram.

Keychron’s product pages and keyboard-layout reference document the conventional examples. ZSA documents the Voyager’s 52 keys. The broad 40% range describes common compact arrangements rather than a standard. Do not choose a keycap kit from this count alone: key widths, stems and rows also have to match.
Physical widths: use published examples
For desk planning, “width” below means the left-to-right span of the case, even where a manufacturer labels that dimension “length.” These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements made by Keyboard Ranker.

The Q9 example is a useful warning: fewer rows do not necessarily mean a narrower case. Its published depth is 94.1 mm, but its width exceeds the plastic K6’s. The Q8’s angled arrangement is another reason not to translate a percentage into millimetres.
A split’s working footprint includes the gap and angle you choose between its halves. The Q11 figure is a reference for the hardware together, not a prediction of the space your setup will occupy. Allow for its connecting cable too.
Full-size: 100%
Full-size keeps the alphanumeric block, number row, function row, navigation group, arrows and number pad. Keychron’s K10 documents a conventional 104-key example. Additional media controls can push another full-size model’s count higher.
Choose this arrangement if you need frequent numeric entry or want the familiar separation between navigation and typing keys. It avoids relocating those blocks just to save width. You may still use layers for media or device controls; full-size does not mean every possible action has its own key.
Check mouse space before ordering. The keyboard’s right edge and the position you use for the letter block affect where a mouse can sit. A separate numpad is an alternative when you want numeric entry only some of the time, or want to choose where the pad goes.
96% and 1800-compact: keeping the numpad
These labels cover compact arrangements that retain a number pad while closing gaps and reorganizing navigation keys. They are related categories, not interchangeable specifications. An 1800-style design may keep visible separation that a dense 96% omits.
The K4 Version 3 is a 100-key 96% example. It is narrower than the full-size K10 in the table while still providing a numpad. Its layout reference is more useful than its percentage when deciding which navigation keys remain directly accessible.
This size is worth considering when numeric entry and desk width both matter. Inspect the arrow cluster, the numpad’s zero key and the keys around Delete. If you navigate by the gaps on a full-size board, note which gaps the compact arrangement removes. A compact numpad layout can also need keycaps absent from a basic full-size kit.
TKL: the conservative reduction
Tenkeyless removes the number pad and preserves the conventional function row, arrows and navigation cluster. The ANSI K8’s 87 keys illustrate the familiar arrangement. The name is conventional; it does not mean exactly ten physical switches were removed from a 104-key keyboard.
TKL is a useful starting point if you do not need a numpad but want direct access to the other standard groups. You can compare it with your existing board by covering the numpad and checking whether any frequent task becomes inconvenient.
It still has trade-offs: numeric entry uses the top row or a separate device, and its case is wider than many 65% or 75% alternatives. Choose it because you value the key arrangement, not because it guarantees comfort, switch quality or a particular sound.
75%: function keys in a compact arrangement
A 75% retains F1-F12 and arrows, then shortens or rearranges the separate navigation block. The K2 has 84 keys; other models exchange a corner position for an encoder or change the right-hand column.
Some designs are densely packed. Others leave gaps around selected key groups. A layout image shows those differences more clearly than the percentage. Check where Delete, Home, End and Page Up/Down are located and whether Print Screen needs a layer.
This size suits a buyer who wants a smaller case while keeping direct function-key access. It does not guarantee all the keys or spacing of a TKL. The combined 65% vs 75% layout guide includes the layer and keycap checklist, so there is no need to treat the two sizes as unrelated buying decisions.
65%: dedicated arrows without an F-row
A conventional 65% keeps the letters, number row, modifiers, arrows and a small selection of navigation keys. Its F1-F12 actions move onto a layer. The K6 is a 68-key example.
This is a useful compromise when arrows are frequent but function keys are occasional. It can also suit someone whose custom keymap already makes F-keys comfortable behind a modifier. Check the factory layer if the keyboard does not support remapping.
Right-column choices differ between models. Two boards advertised as 65% can put Home, End and Delete in different places or omit a dedicated position entirely. Make a list of your essential shortcuts before choosing between them.
60%: the navigation decision
A conventional 60% retains the main typing block and number row while removing the separate function row, arrows, navigation block and numpad. Keychron lists 61 keys for the ANSI K12. Modified small layouts may retain arrows by changing key sizes or placements, so inspect the actual variant.
The key decision is whether layered navigation fits your work. A user who already navigates mainly through editor commands may have different needs from someone who uses arrows in dialogs, spreadsheets and multiple applications.

40%: putting numbers on a layer
Many 40% designs remove the dedicated number row as well as the function row and numpad. Numbers, symbols and navigation then share switches with letters through additional layers. The exact count and placement vary substantially.
Keychron’s Q9 family demonstrates a small keyboard that retains dedicated arrows, which is why “smaller than 65%” cannot universally mean “no arrows.” Read the full diagram and keymap rather than expecting every small keyboard to follow the same sequence of deletions.
Before choosing one, sketch how you would enter numbers, brackets, passwords and application shortcuts. Make sure the layer key remains accessible while holding Shift or Control. These are practical requirements, not a proficiency test: a small programmable board is appropriate when its arrangement fits your habits and you are willing to configure it.
Alice: angled keys in one case
Alice describes a divided, angled typing arrangement within a single chassis. It is a geometry choice that can coexist with different size categories. Keychron’s Q8 is a 65% Alice example, but an Alice board does not have to omit a function row or numpad.
Look at the angle of the letter groups, the positions of duplicated or relocated keys, and the split space bars. The halves are fixed by the case, so you cannot move them independently as you can with a physically split keyboard.
Keycap requirements deserve a separate check. Split space bars and extra letter positions can require a kit extension even when the total key count is modest. Choose this geometry for the arrangement it offers; an ergonomic label does not establish a medical benefit or guarantee it will suit every user.
Split: independent halves, separate layout choices
A split keyboard separates the left and right sections physically. It can preserve familiar row staggering, as on Keychron’s 75% Q11, or use a columnar arrangement and thumb keys, as on ZSA’s 52-key Voyager.
Columnar and ortholinear also describe arrangement rather than percentage. A columnar board aligns keys in columns, often with stagger between columns. An ortholinear arrangement uses a regular grid. Neither term by itself tells you how many rows or layers a board has.
For a split, plan the whole setup: half placement, connecting cable, host cable, pointing device and any tenting accessories. Verify switch and keycap compatibility separately, especially with low-profile designs. Layers and firmware: check before buying
A missing physical key remains usable only if the firmware assigns its action somewhere accessible. Keychron’s layout reference documents factory combinations; QMK’s layer documentation explains configurable alternatives.
Separate three questions: does the board expose the function you need, can you move it, and does the saved configuration work on your intended computers? A manufacturer configurator, VIA support and source-level QMK configuration provide different capabilities. Confirm support for the exact model and revision.
Try your essential combinations on a remappable keyboard if you already own one. Include modifier-plus-arrow selection, function-key shortcuts and symbols. The useful result is a list of actions you can reach comfortably, not a predetermined number of days you should spend adapting.
Keycap and physical-layout checks

For compact boards, verify right Shift, bottom-row modifiers, space bars and navigation-row coverage. Matching switch stems alone is insufficient: the cap must also fit the required width and row. Buying enough caps numerically does not guarantee the correct shapes are included.
Do this check before selecting a barebones kit. List the kit, switches, keycaps and any separate numpad or wrist rest as one purchase. Otherwise an apparently inexpensive compact board can require accessories omitted from the initial comparison.
A decision sequence for your desk
- List the physical keys you need daily, starting with numpad, F-row, arrows and navigation.
- Keep every form factor that provides those keys, including compact full-size if the numpad matters.
- Decide which missing actions you are willing to put on layers.
- Compare actual width, depth, front height and cable placement of shortlisted models.
- Confirm physical layout, keycap coverage, firmware and connection requirements.
